Learning-Guided Cognitive Control: An Automatic Control Mechanism
Ample evidence now demonstrates that people learn associations between external cues and cognitive control demands, such that control is reactively enhanced/relaxed in the presence of cues predicting a high/low likelihood of distraction. This form of control, termed learning-guided control, involves rapid adjustments that occur outside of awareness, thereby challenging traditional conceptualizations of cognitive control. In this talk I will present evidence from my lab demonstrating the automatic nature of learning-guided control. The evidence stems from a variety of experiments in which we have investigated the effects of concurrent demands on learning-guided control and the transfer of learning-guided control from training contexts to near (e.g., new stimuli) and far (new tasks) transfer contexts. The theoretical and applied implications of our research will be discussed, alongside the relative advantages of learning-guided control over other forms of control such as proactive control.
