The bachelor major (100%) represents the first of a multi-step study model and is intended to help students towards their first degree qualified for profession. The bachelor’s degree qualifies you for a following master course

  • The B.Sc. Psychology 100% comprises a standard period of study of 6 semesters, however students possess the freedom to over- or undercut the standard period.

Modular Structure

The studies’ courses are structured via modules. A module is a temporal and thematically closed learning unit, which can be composed of multiple courses.

Credit points are awarded for the completion of a module. Over the course of studies, a total of 180 credit points must be achieved. Divided onto 6 semesters connotes a mean of 30 credit points per semester. 1 credit point correlates to a temporal effort of approx. 30 hours. The study is clearly structured, with a relatively solid module order; aside from theoretical content, it also contains practical parts. In addition, it is possible to include visits abroad as well as prolonged internships.

The University of Heidelberg’s study programme B.Sc. Psychology 100% continues the tradition set by the diploma course and provides students with widespread education in all relevant basic and applicatory areas of psychology. Students acquire fundamental knowledge regarding scientific methodology of psychological research.

Course Process

The course can be roughly divided into the following phases:

  • Introduction: Shortly prior to the first semester’s lecture period, students are provided with an introduction over the course of several days. During which you will be informed about the course’s structure and contents – the so called Compact-Introduction-Seminar (EinfĂĽhrungs-Kompakt-Seminar (EKS)) grants students an overview of institutions, fields of work, subject structure, history and methodological basics of psychology.

  • Basics: Following up to the short entry phase, students acquire knowledge in all relevant basic and applicatory fields of psychology. This includes multiple basic subjects and applicatory subjects, as well as those covering research methodology. Included within basic subjects are for example developmental and social psychology. Educational as well as clinical psychology are covered as applicatory subjects. Methodological knowledge is acquired in lectures concerning statistics and experimental design.

  • Immersion: During the final third of their study period, students are able to cover in depth basic and applicatory subjects. In addition, they acquire qualifications, which prepare them for their future professional practice. The concrete courses can be chosen from a pool of various elective subjects: Application Oriented Immersion, Research Oriented Immersion, Subject Specific Key Qualifications and Personal Key Qualifications.

  • Occupational Orientation and Internship: A lecture series regarding applicatory fields of practical psychology and research and 6 weeks of external work experience (internship) provide students with the opportunity to get to know the different occupational fields psychologists can pursue, as well as develop their own, personal perspectives.

  • Graduation - Bachelor Thesis: A bachelor thesis is meant to show a student’s capabilities to independently elaborate on a psychological problem within a certain amount of time, by means of scientific methodology.

Conveying basic knowledge takes up approx. 2/3 of the duration of study. This time is mostly spent by visiting lectures. The immersion covers the last third; here students attend multiple seminars, which they can choose from within the modules. Furthermore, they complete their internship as well as their bachelor thesis.
