Accomodation & Travel Information

Here you will find practical information on how to reach Heidelberg and get around the city. Below, you will also find a list of recommended hotel options for your stay. We highly recommend booking early. Heidelberg is a popular tourist destination, especially in the summer months, and hotels tend to fill up quickly.

Travel Information

Arrival by Plane

The closest international airport to Heidelberg is Frankfurt International Airport (FRA). From Frankfurt Airport, there are frequent and convenient train connections to Heidelberg Central Station (Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof). The journey takes approximately 1 hour (see "Arrival by Train" below).

We recommend booking your train ticket in advance via Deutsche Bahn (DB) and selecting the “Flex” (flexible) fare option if possible. A Flex ticket allows you to take any train on your selected route on the booked day and provides greater flexibility in case of flight delays. While saver fares are cheaper, they are tied to a specific train and cannot be changed without additional fees. Please note that last-minute ticket purchases can be significantly more expensive.

Other airports in the region include Stuttgart Airport (STR) and Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN). However, connections from these airports to Heidelberg are considerably less convenient and may require multiple transfers.

Arrival by Train

From Frankfurt Airport, you can take either:

  • ICE (InterCity Express): High-speed trains, slightly faster and more comfortable. Seat reservations are optional but recommended during busy travel times.

  • RE or RB (Regional trains): Slightly slower with more stops but often cheaper and do not require seat reservations.

Both options run regularly and connect directly to Heidelberg.

Arrival by Car

Heidelberg is well connected via the German motorway network (Autobahnen), primarily the A5 and A656. However, please note:

  • Parking in the city center can be limited and relatively expensive.

  • Many hotels offer parking, but advance reservation is recommended.

  • Park-and-ride options are available on the outskirts of the city.

Getting Around in Heidelberg

Heidelberg has a reliable and well-connected public transportation system, including trams and buses. All major conference venues and most hotels are easily accessible by public transport. The city center is compact, scenic, and easily walkable.

Accomodation

There is a wide range of hotels to choose from, both in Heidelberg’s historical center and in the sourrounding area.

The conference itself will take place at two different locations: From Monday to Wednesday, we will be at the Marsilius Kolleg, and on the remaining two days, we will be at two locations in Heidelberg's old town.

The table below lists suitable hotel options in different parts of Heidelberg, including the estimated travel time by public transportation to the different venues, as well as a direct link to their websites.

If you want to enjoy the typical "Heidelberg-Experience", we recommend booking a hotel in the historical old town. For the fastest and most convenient journey to both our venues, hotels located in Bergheim are perfect.

Please note: We highly recommend booking early. Heidelberg is a popular tourist destination, especially in the summer months, and hotels tend to fill up quickly.
