Abstract
Although intelligence and personality are the main constructs in the domain of individual differences research, some more specific aspects of their relationship still remain unclear. Especially findings on positive associations between Openness to Experience and General Intelligence (g) have yet to be examined. Therefore, this study analyzed the relationship between Openness to Experience and its subcomponents Openness and Intellect with g, along with its subfacets of verbal, numerical and figural intelligence in a sample of 115 German-speaking adults. It was hypothesized that both subfacets Openness and Intellect would correlate with g. After controlling for Intellect, Openness would not be correlated with g, nor numerical and figural intelligence; nevertheless, a positive correlation between Openness and verbal intelligence was expected. The personality-related constructs Openness and Intellect were measured using the German version of the Big Five Aspects Scale (BFAS-G), making it possible to quantify these factors separately. IST-Screening was used to assess intelligence (g), as well as its subfacets verbal, numerical and figural intelligence. All variables were assessed through an online-study. The statistical analysis was conducted using structural equation modeling (SEM). Our results showed that the subfactor Intellect significantly correlates with g and all its subfactors, while Openness does not significantly correlate with g nor with any of its subfactors. This study contributes to fundamental research and provides evidence for the interconnectedness of personality and intelligence.
