Network of Psychological Addiction Research

Goals, Highlights, Selfunderstanding

The members of the organization "Network for Psychological Addiction Research" [Netzwerk Psychologische Suchtforschung], founded in March 1995, represent an informal gathering of colleagues, who conduct drug and addiction research at a variety of universities, colleges, facilities, and offices in the EU. At a peculiar meeting in October 1995 the organization«s members decided about their main goals, which are as follows:

  • It is the organization«s goal to enhance psychological drug and addiction research by gaining attention within the scientific community. There also is an emphasis on the implications on consequences in areas of social and health politics.
  • Spreading of results of psychological drug research (i.e. in the form of seminars, congresses, conferences, publications, trainings etc.)
  • Public Relations in regards to psychological addiction research (i.e. official statements, answering of media questions, creating information material, e.g. flyers)
  • Enhancing of professional information exchange between professionals in regards to drug and addiction research (work seminars, multicenter projects, information posts)
  • Network of drug and addiction research (i.e. on an European and international level, working with the drug control organizations like EMBDDA in Lisboa, attending international projects)
  • Advise public and political organizations scientifically based about drug and addiction related topics (i.e. statements, advice with projects)

Some working highlights of the members are:

  • Relapse research (models, determination, process, diagnostics, consequences, and intervention)
  • Social deviant behavior relating to drug and alcohol abuse (violence, sexual abuse, legalizing of drugs, delinquency)
  • Differential diagnostics (development and evaluation of instruments, classification schemes, indication and prescription of treatments)
  • Theory of development and process of addictions (ethics, biographic process, natural process, vulnerability and immunization, protective social network and social support)
  • Effectiveness of interventions (therapy research, follow-up studies, optimization of treatments, quality management in addiction treatment)
  • Cognitive aspects of addiction (information processing for therapists and patients, cognitive treatment of addictions, subjective addiction models)
  • Family psychological aspects (courses of development of disorders in children of alcoholics, transmission studies, relationships influenced by addiction, familial aspects of addictions)
