Reuschenbach, B. (1999). The influence of the employment interview and different ways of recruitment on retention and job satisfaction of nurses. Poster presented to 4th.Conference of European Nurse Director Assocation (ENDA). 13-15. Oct. 1999.

The sutdy attempts to test the Theory of realistic job preview (Wanous, 1992), This theory argues that the quantity of information given to newcomers affects long-term job satisfaction, organizational commitment and their retention.

The quantity of information given to newcomers was influenced by the content of the employment interview and by different ways of recruitment: people who know the hospital from the time of their apprenticeship know more about their future job.

The data selected in this study on nurse-directors confirms, that hospitals which use inside sources to recruitment have lower turnover rates. The data of 44 nurses support the assumption that high degrees of information results in more job satisfaction and more organizational commitment. The expected effects on job retention were not confirmed

Reuschenbach, B. (1999). Selection of personnel by nurse directiors in germany: An anaylsis of different selection methods and suggestions for further developments. Poster presented at the 4th. Conference of European Nurse Director Assocation (ENDA), 13-15. Oct. 1999.

256 nurse directors and 220 apprentices in hospitals were asked about the use and acceptance of different methods for the selection of nurses. Some of the methods were identified by this investigation which are accepted by applicants and nurse-directors in the sense of "socal validity" (Schuler & Stehler, 1983), and which have also a high criterion related validity in meta-analysis to predict the real performance of nurses. This paper argues for the development of structured employment interviews - with standardised questioning of the applicants- which consider the demands of specifis job requirements.
