Complex Problem Solving: Research Principles

In research on complex problem solving (CPS), there are different opinions about the best research strategy. Below are some principles which are important for the Heidelberg approach to CPS.

Research principles

The basic idea is to do systematic experimental research on complex problem solving. This research should address the following issues:
  • use of scenarios with well-known attributes (in contrast to using scenarios which behavior is widely unknown to the researcher)
  • use of small-scale systems (in contrast to using systems with hundreds of variables)
  • assessment of the subjects' previous knowledge
  • use of explicit conditions for each the exploration and control of systems (in contrast to leave both aspects open to subjects' own definition)
  • making a clear difference during the experiment between knowledge acquisition and system control (in contrast to their confoundation)
  • use of proved and reliable indicators for each knowledge acquisition and system control
  • systematic variation of certain system attributes
  • Integration of cognitive, emotional, and motivational processes
  • broad spectrum of data acquistion (incl. eye movements, thinking aloud, videographs, behavioral decisions)
