North Rhine - Westphalia is, according to the inhabitant figure (16 mio.), the biggest state of the Fed. Rep. of Germany. The KFH NW was founded in 1971 and is owned by the five catholic dioceses of North Rhine - Westphalia, which are Köln, Münster, Aachen, Essen and Parderborn. The KFH NW has departments in four cities of North Rhine - Westphalia: Köln, Aachen, Münster, and Paderborn. The KFH NW is the biggest privately managed University for Applied Science in Germany and is, of course, state approved. As a catholic university the KFH NW is especially dedicated to the education, research, and training in the fields of social welfare and education, remedial education, and nursing. Special attention is paid to questions of youth development and marginalization, esp. combined with questions of immigration, drug abuse, psychic and social deviance.   The university¥s activities are rooted in the mental and philosophical ideas of the catholic social teaching and theory starting at the end of the last century. Therefore, the study at the KFH NW is concentrated on the faculties for social work/welfare, social education, and nursing. There are approximately 2.000 students at the four different departments in Köln, Aachen, Münster, and Paderborn. The principalship of the KFH NW is also located in Köln (Cologne). The entire staff for training, teaching, and research includes almost 100 persons. Most of them are professors in the fields of education, social work, psychology, medicine, nursing, philosophy, and social management.   As a University for Applied Science the KFH NW has multiple connections to the different practical fields of social work and education (e.g. drug rehabilitation, jails, kindergartens, children`s homes, family treatment, medical and mental hospitals etc.).
